WOAH's Panama-United States screwworm commission director describes new world screwworm, a fly whose larvae destroy living tissue in warm-blooded animals, and its effects on cattle productivity. He notes the recent resurgence in Central America has put the region on alert and that some human cases have been reported.
Screwworm spread toward Mexico and the US border threatens livestock movements and could tighten US feeder cattle supplies through import restrictions, which is supportive for cattle prices.
