Live and feeder cattle futures on the CME fell for a third straight session as expectations of rising beef supplies drove liquidation of long positions, especially in feeders. December live cattle settled at 218.775 cents per pound and January feeders at 315.600 cents.
Both contracts had reached record highs in mid-October after the US herd shrank following drought, and an screwworm outbreak in Mexico had halted most feeder imports since May.
Prospects of reopening Mexican feeder cattle imports would add supply to a tight US herd, pressuring feeder prices and reducing feeder demand for corn and meal. Liquidation has been driving the decline more than changes in fundamentals.
