USDA's Cattle on Feed report showed December feedlot placements were 17.6% above a year earlier and more than twice analyst expectations. Analysts said the placements reflect herd liquidation, including heavy cow slaughter, which will add beef supply through the year.
Heavy placements point to more finished cattle reaching the market later in 2017, which weighs on fed cattle prices. Liquidation also raises near-term beef output before the herd rebuilds.
