U.S. imports of biomass-based diesel, including biodiesel and renewable diesel, rose 65% in 2016 to a record 916 million gallons. Rising Renewable Fuel Standard targets and the expired biodiesel blender's tax credit drove the increase.
Biodiesel imports alone nearly doubled to a record 693 million gallons.
Strong import demand for biomass-based diesel supports soybean oil and feedstock demand for biofuel, which can firm vegetable oil prices. Policy incentives remain the main swing factor for future import flows.
