Feeder cattle futures fell an average of $4.08 last week as a heavy calf run ahead of Thanksgiving pressured calf and feeder prices. The USDA Cattle on Feed report showed October feedlot placements up 10.19% from last year at 2.48 million head, though 2% below expectations.
Negotiated fed cattle traded $1 higher at $116/cwt live.
Heavy placements add expected cattle supply for the first half of next year, which weighs on feeder prices and feed demand outlook. Firm fed cash prices support finished-cattle values even as feeder prices soften.
