The rand weakened 1.4% to 13.60 per dollar early on Tuesday as the dollar index rose 0.15% to 96.164. Traders were waiting for Janet Yellen's semi-annual testimony to Congress on Wednesday and Thursday for signals on US rate hikes.
The JSE opened nearly 1% higher, led by resources, on the weaker rand.
