USDA's Grain Transportation Report says rail grain carloads in April to June were 4 percent above last year and 15 percent above the prior three-year average. Year-to-date barge tonnage on the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas rivers remained strong, and ocean freight and diesel prices were above last year.
Strong grain movement keeps rail, barge and ocean freight demand firm, which can raise transport costs and narrow basis for feed buyers in the interior. USDA expects only slight production declines, so freight costs are likely to stay supported.
