The Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul crested at 19.83 feet on March 31, well above major flood stage of 17 feet. Snowmelt and rain from the Minnesota River and its tributaries drove the rise, and the water will flow south toward areas farther downstream.
Floodwater moving downstream extends river closures and transport delays across the Midwest, supporting barge freight rates and interior basis strength as shipments are held back.
