Western Australian growers have planted about 530,000 hectares of oats this season, up sharply from roughly 320,000 hectares in 2018 and 2019. Some acreage shifted from barley after China imposed an 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley in May.
Larger Australian oat and barley plantings add export supply, while China's barley tariff curbs barley demand from Australia. Both point to softer prices for these grains.
