USTR Robert Lighthizer told Congress China had bought about $10 billion of US agricultural goods, well short of the $36.5 billion phase one commitment. Analysts note that export sales are running counter-seasonally higher and that China would need heavy purchases in the fourth quarter.
Soybeans could account for 60% or more of the purchases.
Heavy fourth-quarter Chinese buying would support US soybean and corn export demand and prices into the new crop marketing year. Cancellations remain a risk if relations sour.
