Kenyan feed millers are asking the government to allow imports of genetically modified yellow maize and soybeans to lower high feed production costs. The Agriculture ministry has so far declined, citing Kenya's 2012 GMO import ban, and the sector faces shortages of soya, sunflower and cottonseed cake.
Kenyan feed makers facing ingredient shortages would bid for imported maize, soymeal and oilseed cakes if the ban is lifted, which could lift East African import demand. The outcome remains uncertain and the impact on world prices would be small.
