Government biosecurity experts warn that a detection of lumpy skin disease in northern Australia would likely lead to state borders closing to cattle movements. Thousands of head move daily between NSW and Queensland and between the Northern Territory and South Australia, so closures would disrupt trade.
A domestic outbreak would halt live cattle movements and exports of hides, milk and boxed beef, pressuring Australian cattle prices while lifting uncertainty premiums in the market.
