Some U.S. railroads began halting crop shipments on Thursday, a day ahead of a potential rail worker strike. Norfolk Southern said it would halt unit trains of bulk commodities, and other carriers were expected to follow.
The halts threaten grain exports and feed deliveries for livestock.
Stranded grain at origin elevators weakens cash bids and widens basis in the interior while export and feed flows stall. Buyers face tighter nearby feed supply if the stoppage lasts.
