The European Commission, Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to set up a consultative process and joint task force on implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation. The agreement followed a late-May mission to Brussels by Malaysian and Indonesian ministers, who had voiced concerns about the law's effect on palm oil and smallholders.
The dialogue may ease some trade friction over palm oil, which limits the immediate bearish impact of the EU rules. Practical implementation details still remain open and will drive future palm oil demand from the EU.
