The Indian Centre banned exports of non-basmati white rice from July 20, 2023, with narrow exemptions for cargo already loaded or berthed. The government said the variety accounts for 25% of national rice exports and that domestic retail prices rose 11.5% over the year.
Exports of this variety had risen even after a 20% export duty was imposed in 2022.
Taking a quarter of India's rice exports off the market reduces global availability and supports higher international rice prices.
