US natural gas futures fell sharply on February 1 as forecasts for mid-February shifted much warmer. The March contract settled down 25.7% at $3.237 per mmBtu, the largest one-day percentage drop for the front-month contract since 1995 excluding rollover days.
The decline erased the prior Friday's gains from record cold.
Warmer weather reduced expected heating demand and eased domestic gas costs, which lowers energy and processing costs for feed producers. The move signals weaker near-term demand for gas-fired power and heating.
