Mississippi River shipping may return to normal by spring after improved snowpack and precipitation, according to Soy Transportation Coalition executive director Mike Steenhoek. Memphis gauge readings have swung about 20 feet since last fall, and the Corps has been dredging around the clock since July.
Rising river levels reduce barge restrictions and freight costs, which supports southbound grain basis and lowers input delivery costs. Recovery takes time, so traffic normalization will be gradual.
