Average Mississippi barge rates peaked above $105 per ton in early October 2022 when low river levels restricted traffic. Rates have since fallen to about $18 per ton as precipitation raised river levels.
Shipments were much lower than the usual seasonal drop during the low-water period.
Lower barge freight narrows the cost gap between interior origins and Gulf export basis, supporting corn and soybean flows. Falling freight reduces feed ingredient transport costs for buyers.
