USDA's weekly Grain Transportation Report shows unshipped wheat, corn and soybean balances for 2023/24 at 30.39 million metric tons, down 26% from a year earlier. Low Mississippi water has cut barge loading drafts by 24% and tow sizes by 17-38%, with the St. Louis barge spot rate at $38.34 per ton.
Reduced barge capacity raises freight costs and delays shipments of grain moving to Gulf export terminals, which can widen basis and lower farm-gate prices in the interior while supporting Gulf export premiums.
