The EPA proposed allowing light-duty electric vehicle manufacturers to generate tradeable eRINs from renewable electricity starting in 2024. Only electricity from qualifying renewable biomass would qualify, while solar, wind and hydropower would not.
The agency estimates 600 million eRINs in 2024 and 1.2 billion in 2025.
Biomass-based eRINs could add a new compliance credit source under the Renewable Fuel Standard, which may ease demand for conventional biofuel RINs. The effect on soybean oil and other feedstock prices is uncertain but likely modest.
