University of Arkansas researchers have released new rice varieties, including the medium-grain Taurus, which has outyielded other medium-grain varieties in testing. Seed demand is strong, with foundation seed sold out for this year.
California medium-grain production has declined after several years of severe drought, and its price has been above $30 per hundredweight since October 2021.
Lower California medium-grain output from drought supports prices for that class. Higher-yielding varieties could eventually expand Southern supply, which would limit longer-term price gains.
