Striking Rail and Maritime Union workers forced Lyttelton Port to close for a 13-day strike over pay and safety after talks with Lyttelton Port Company broke down. The port handles more than half of the South Island's container volume, and KiwiRail warned rail services to and from the port would be disrupted.
