USDA's August supply and demand report projects higher 2020 US milk production, as growth in milk per cow offsets a smaller herd. USDA lowered its 2020 cheese, butter and nonfat dry milk price forecasts and cut the 2020 all-milk price by $0.30 to $17.95/cwt.
It also expects 2021 cheese and butter prices to fall.
Higher expected milk output paired with lower product prices points to weaker Class III and Class IV milk prices, which lowers the cost of dairy-based feed ingredients and reduces dairy herd feed-buying power.
