The ReliefWeb El Niño/La Niña update of 15 February 2017 reports that tropical Pacific temperatures returned to ENSO-neutral levels in January 2017 after weak La Niña conditions in the second half of 2016. Most climate models expect neutral conditions through the first half of 2017, with El Niño possible later in the year.
A shift from La Niña toward neutral or El Niño later in 2017 raises the risk of drier weather in parts of Asia and Australia, which could tighten supplies of grains and oilseeds later in the year. For now the signal is weak and far off, so price impact is limited.
