A joint World Bank and ICRIER study covering 2004-05 to 2013-14 found that Indian domestic prices for 15 farm commodities, including rice, wheat, maize, mango, banana, potato and buffalo meat, were below export parity in 72% of years. The authors say export curbs and other trade policies kept domestic prices low, which they describe as an implicit tax on farmers.
Persistent export restrictions keep Indian grain and rice supplies inside the country and limit exports to world markets. Removing these curbs would add supply to global trade and could weigh on international prices.
