Researchers from INRA, CNRS and CEA published a study in Nature Communications showing that unusually warm late autumn temperatures worsened the effect of excess spring rain on wheat yields. The study uses France's 2016 wheat crop, which fell 20 to 50% in the main basin, as its key example.
The findings improve yield forecasting for extreme weather, which matters for European wheat supply risk, but they do not change current crop estimates on their own.
