A severe winter storm, dubbed a bomb cyclone, brought freezing temperatures to much of North America, with 90% of the U.S. failing to reach 32 degrees on New Year's Day. Spot gas in New York traded as high as $175/MMBtu while NYMEX futures averaged below $3, highlighting a pipeline capacity shortfall in the Northeast.
The gap between regional spot and futures prices shows that pipeline constraints, not just supply, are driving price spikes, which can raise energy and fertilizer input costs for feed producers.
