US biodiesel demand is projected to fall because of a series of EPA small refinery exemptions (SREs) that reduce the Renewable Fuel Standard obligation. Scott Irwin estimates the exemptions cut demand by 2.5 billion gallons over 2016-2018 and could exceed 700 million gallons this year.
The National Biodiesel Board says retroactive 2017 exemptions cut that year's obligation by over 240 million gallons, with effects continuing through 2019.
Lower mandated biodiesel demand reduces crush-driven demand for soybean oil, which weakens soy oil prices and shifts crush margins toward meal.
