University of Missouri specialist William Wiebold reports that wet fields prevented planting of 750,000 acres of corn and 480,000 acres of soybeans in Missouri, according to the September 4 FSA report. About half the planted corn emerged after May 26, so yields depend heavily on July and August weather.
Warm nights during grain fill are also a concern for yield.
Lost acreage and late planting reduce Missouri's contribution to the national crop and support corn and soybean prices. Feed buyers in the Midwest could see tighter local supplies.
