India's agriculture ministry asked that milk be added to the Rs 35 billion Price Stabilisation Fund so states and milk unions can buy fresh milk and convert it into skimmed milk powder and ghee. The move follows a sharp fall in procurement prices driven by weak global markets and flush-season oversupply.
Government-backed purchases would absorb surplus milk and support farmgate prices during the flush season. Most of the central fund has already been spent, which may limit how much buying actually happens.
