IEEP submitted a written response to the European Commission's public consultation on minimising the EU's contribution to deforestation and forest degradation through products placed on its market. The submission argues for clear sustainability criteria for deforestation-free products and for using EU trade agreements to address deforestation.
Proposed EU due-diligence rules could eventually restrict imports of palm oil and soy from forest-risk regions, adding compliance costs and shifting trade flows. The effect on prices is still speculative because no regulation has been finalised.
