A report by economists at Iowa State, NC State and the National Pork Producers Council found that US pork prices have risen due to strong demand, higher input costs, labor shortages and supply chain bottlenecks rather than meatpacker concentration. The report also found that US pork prices remain below those in many other countries.
Rising packing costs and labor constraints tighten the pork supply chain, which supports hog prices and demand for feed. The finding that concentration is not the cause reduces the likelihood of policy intervention that could alter packer margins.
