The USDA Grain Transportation Report for the week of October 25 said the St. Louis barge spot rate rose almost 22 percent to $88.46 per ton, below the October 11 peak of $105.85. Low Mississippi River water levels have left barge companies with little spot capacity, and forward barge rates for November through early next year are far above normal.
USDA also said it will stop publishing rail-to-port data after the November 10 report.
Tight barge capacity raises the cost of moving corn and soybeans down the Mississippi, which widens the discount for interior bids and lowers farm-gate prices while supporting Gulf basis. Feed buyers in the interior should expect higher delivered costs into late 2022 and early 2023.
