Indonesia stopped live cattle imports from four Australian export facilities after 13 cattle shipped from the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia tested positive for lumpy skin disease. Australia had maintained that it was free of the disease.
The disease spreads through insects and affects cattle and buffalo.
Australia's live cattle exports to Indonesia are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, so the import halt cuts demand for Australian cattle. If the disease reaches Australia, it could restrict meat and dairy exports to many markets.
