IFFO reports that Peruvian fishing has been largely closed this year to protect fish stocks during El Niño, with only a handful of fishing days authorized versus a typical two-month season. Peru's fishmeal output fell by half in the first five months of 2023, and other producers such as South Africa cannot fill the gap.
Peru accounts for about 20% of world fishmeal output, so the shortfall tightens global supply of fishmeal and fish oil. Buyers should expect firm fishmeal prices and added demand for soybean meal as a replacement protein.
