An IFPRI analysis dated October 2, 2023 says India's July ban on non-basmati rice exports, plus later surcharges and minimum prices, has pushed benchmark Thai rice up 14%, Vietnamese rice up 22% and Indian white rice up 12%. Myanmar also banned exports, and the Philippines set retail price ceilings.
El Niño adds further threat to Asian rice output.
Export restrictions by India and Myanmar remove a large share of world rice trade, which keeps international rice prices elevated. Rough rice prices are likely to stay firm while the restrictions and El Niño risk persist.
