Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City locked out Teamsters-represented workers at 12:01 a.m. on August 22 after contract talks failed. The lockout halted rail traffic within Canada, and the railroads had already embargoed some hazardous chemicals.
Union Pacific warned that more than 2,500 of its cars per day would not cross the border if the shutdown continued.
Halted cross-border rail traffic threatens U.S. grain, fertilizer and ethanol shipments, which could raise freight costs and disrupt feed and input supply. Prolonged disruption would tighten supply chains and lift logistics costs across North American agriculture.
