Ranchers in Sonora, Mexico, are asking the US to reopen the border to cattle, which has been closed for most of the past year. The US has confirmed nine screwworm cases, mostly in Texas, while the Arizona border region remains free of the parasite.
The Sonora ranchers' union president says the closure has hurt both countries' industries.
Reopening the border with enhanced inspections would restore Mexican feeder cattle flows and ease US feeder supply, which is bearish for feeder cattle. The request is only advocacy, so no immediate supply change is confirmed.
