The Iowa Soybean Association commented on proposed amendments to California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard after a CARB workshop in April 2024. The LCFS now drives nearly half of US biomass-based diesel consumption.
The group opposes proposed field-level certification of corn and soybeans and supports rejecting a flat cap on crop-based lipids.
A cap on lipid feedstocks would reduce soybean oil demand from the LCFS market, while the proposed certification adds compliance costs. Rejecting the cap keeps this demand intact and supports soybean oil prices.
