Chinese egg producers face higher costs as the government's bird flu crackdown forces hens to be kept beyond their prime laying period. Egg prices in the world's largest producer hit seven-year lows this week, below 4 yuan per kilogram.
Government figures cited show farmers losing about 32.5 yuan per hen over its lifetime at current prices.
Longer-lived hens and weak egg prices point to cuts in flock management and a prolonged oversupply, which weighs on egg prices. The effect on feed grain demand is small but leans bearish.
