A panel at America's Central Port in Granite City, Illinois, highlighted the St. Louis region's role as the highest-capacity grain barge handling area on the Mississippi River. Speakers said river freight in the region has grown disproportionately over three decades and that infrastructure investment will be needed to handle expected increases in corn and soybean freight volume.
Barge handling capacity at St. Louis affects the cost and availability of moving corn and soybeans to Gulf export, which feeds into barge freight rates and local feed grain basis levels.
