Mexico is planning to diversify its agricultural import sources in response to threats from the Trump administration during NAFTA renegotiations. The country is targeting U.S. corn imports, worth about $2.6 billion annually, and is exploring substitute supplies from Brazil and Argentina.
If Mexico shifts corn purchases away from the U.S., it would reduce U.S. export demand and could pressure U.S. corn prices, while supporting South American corn exports. The effect depends on how far the diversification actually proceeds.
