UK barley is tightening the price gap with wheat, with the spread narrowing to an average of £9/t midweek from £13/t a week earlier. The UK barley crop is estimated at 6.7-6.9m tonnes versus 7.2m in 2017, and spot feed barley averaged £167.50/t ex-farm against feed wheat at £176.60/t.
A smaller UK barley crop alongside stronger brewing, malting and feed demand supports firm barley prices for feed buyers. Lower wheat output also keeps barley supported as a substitute.
