Iowa's smaller farmer-feeder cattle operations are marketing fewer cattle in 2018 despite expanding calf crops for three straight years and supportive corn prices. The trend suggests a possible structural change in how cattle feeding is distributed across the state.
A shift away from farmer-feeders could change the timing and regional pattern of cattle marketings and feed demand, which matters for feed buyers in corn-belt feedlots.
