A drop in demand from China and Saudi Arabia sent barley prices tumbling in recent weeks despite low global supply. Strategie Grains said a price war has broken out among the main barley exporters, and EU and Argentine barley prices shed $15-20 a tonne in a month.
China's anti-dumping probe into Australian barley and cheaper corn for feed have added pressure.
Lower import demand and cheaper corn substitution push barley export prices down, and further declines are possible if next season's harvest prospects stay good.
