USDA's Economic Research Service says China's rice stocks are projected to reach a record 113 million tons by end-June 2019, the twelfth straight year of increases. Policymakers are considering disposing of the surplus through ethanol or livestock feed.
If China releases rice into feed markets, it could substitute for corn and imported feed grains, weighing on corn and sorghum demand and on global feed prices. The effect depends on whether rice displaces stored or imported corn.
