ABIOVE, the Brazilian vegetable oil industry association, expects soybean oil demand for biodiesel to rise more than 20% in 2020 to about 5 million metric tons. The increase is tied to a planned 12% biodiesel blend starting in March, up from 11% since September 1.
Nearly half of Brazil's soy oil demand this year went to biodiesel.
A higher mandated blend pulls more soybean oil into biodiesel, tightening soy oil supply and supporting its price relative to meal. Demand growth of this size is a meaningful bullish signal for soy oil and crush margins.
