A PIIE analysis says the October 2019 US-China truce calls for China to buy up to $50 billion of US farm goods annually within two years, but the deal is not yet signed. The author argues that sales of that scale are unlikely and that China would become almost 40% of US farm export revenue.
Doubts about the feasibility of the purchase pledge temper the bullish case for U.S. soybeans and other farm exports, so price expectations built on the deal carry downside risk.
