India Meteorological Department forecasts show El Niño is likely to stay neutral in May through July, with La Niña possible after July. The forecasts point to a normal southwest monsoon this year, which is critical because less than half of India's farmland is irrigated.
A normal monsoon improves prospects for Indian rice and pulse output, easing export demand pressure and supporting lower rice prices.
