USDA said it will revisit country-of-origin labeling (COOL) and propose stricter rules for US-made labels, after the requirement went unenforced since 2016. Critics say current labeling lets imported meat repackaged in the US be sold as Product of USA.
Stricter origin labeling could favor domestic cattle over imported beef in retail, supporting US cattle values. The rule's timing and final form remain uncertain.
